All About the API
Without APIs, There is No Unified Communications
API-03
RingCentral
Communications services have featured a certain amount of interoperability for a long time, thanks to basic Internet protocols like those for exchanging email or setting up Voice over IP connections. The advance of Internet standards is certainly part of this story. For communications services, WebRTC is coming into its own as a way of integrating voice and video into the web browser experience without the need for plugins. Now today’s modern cloud solutions are becoming open platforms facilitated by SDKs and APIs. But the functionalities need to go beyond letting developers add a click to call button. The needs are much greater to support more imaginative possibilities for manipulating call flow, integrating SMS, and customizing reports. This session will highlight the new possibilities of moving communications beyond silos and discuss real-world customers customizing their communications solutions into the way they work everyday.

From CIO to CDO: How to Drive Innovation and Value with Data
HT-01
Sonian
With the rise of SaaS solutions, employees from various business departments are making IT decisions without involving CIOs or their teams. As a result, the role of the CIO has been marginalized, and many CIOs have found themselves more focused on overseeing maintenance-related tasks rather than spearheading innovation-focused initiatives. How can CIOs catapult themselves back into their power positions? The answer lies in something every enterprise is swimming in – data. With data volumes increasing on a daily basis (the average medium size enterprise creates terabytes of raw data per week), CIOs have the opportunity to deliver tremendous value to their businesses by making sense of what this information means for every level of the organization.

Green Cloud Technologies
How do traditional hardware VARs and MSPs pivot their businesses into cloud services? This presentation will discuss the fear and trepidation many resellers feel about jumping into the cloud, and then explains how they can overcome those fears with three key understandings about the nascent industry. First, they must realize that they don’t have to sell “cloud-everything” or transition their entire business to a new thing. Second, by identifying their organization’s niche in the market, they can find a cloud offering that enhances their portfolio and makes sense for their business. Finally, they don’t have to build a cloud solution from the ground up. By partnering with a reliable cloud provider, they can deliver the services their customers demand without the expense and commitment of operating a data center. Once they find their cloud niche, traditional resellers can leverage the benefits of cloud services to expand their business, build recurring revenue, and create new opportunities in a rapidly-growing technology segment.

The Changing Cloud Landscape: Embracing The Multi-cloud Architecture
SP-01a
Faction
The reality of today's enterprise is that of hybrid IT environment — an enterprise’s data flows throughout a variety of geographies, clouds and service providers. Its IT infrastructure is often a mix and match of collocated equipment, multiple cloud providers and a variety of service providers. The reality is, we live in a hybrid and multi-cloud world that is going to force businesses into discovering more efficient ways to flow data easily and securely across all these mediums. It’s time for a multi-cloud mindset. By embracing a multi-cloud mindset, companies enable data arbitrage — a free flow of data and feature-sets among disparate IT mediums. Multi-cloud means internetworking disparate carriers, providers and enterprises in any location. It means embracing the best features and capabilities of every cloud provider. It means data management ‘nirvana,’ with users enjoying a single ubiquitous data management strategy for performance and capabilities across providers. Multi-cloud can be the binding technology that results in greater technology flexibility for customers long-saddled with the challenge of how to move data among multiple providers. It's the perfect example of interoperability among clouds and service providers of all types. By illustrating working examples of multi-cloud services in action spanning many of the world’s most well-known providers, Luke will demonstrate the data gravity behind a multi-cloud mindset.

SMB owners are often challenged to ensure vital business systems are always accessible. They depend on their IT network to be always available, and cannot afford costly failures. Any number of things can go wrong, from failing equipment to unexpected slowdowns and outages. Owners and personnel are focused on managing their businesses and may lack the expertise to monitor critical systems. Some tools are not especially user friendly, may lack the ability to predict failures or provide corrective recommendations. This session highlights some of the challenges faced by SMBs, and covers network management solutions that MSPs can offer, to provide a single integrated solution that makes network management easy.

New technologies like mobile devices and the cloud have given businesses the ability to rapidly adopt new business models. With rapid changes in business come rapid changes in the roles of people and technologies. A user’s identity, role and their workplace (location/device) will define their workspace that can consist of both traditional apps or new emerging cloud or mobile apps. Offering multiple services to meet the needs of unique users is a good thing, but delivering different experiences across those services is no longer acceptable. The experience needs to be seamless across scenarios, user groups and devices. This session will discuss the mindset shift that leaders must make in order to thrive within this digital disruption and share best practices that they can implement to ensure a seamless experience within their own businesses.

Panel: Common Mistakes to Avoid when Building your API
API-09
The first obstacle in successfully building out an API ecosystem or program – well before getting it out to developers and customers – is making sure you have a quality product to take to market. The fact is, it’s not as easy as simply deciding you’re going to design and build an API. If it were, everyone would have a good one. But, there are far too many examples of unsuccessful API launches, which this session is designed to help you avoid. We’ll discuss some examples of failed APIs, why they didn’t work, and what could have been done differently. This session is your guide to successful API development.

And, more than 8 out of 10 customers indicate they like, or even love, when a company responds to them via social channels. So, as the Millennial generation becomes an increasingly influential part of the workforce and, therefore, your customer base, your customer engagement and acquisition strategy has to evolve to become Millennial-friendly. This session will explore the role social media, mobility, and other technologies are and should be playing in your customer-facing strategy, from technology to process, to ensure you’re able to handle this new era of customer engagement.

Due to competition and commoditization, managed service providers have essentially become VARs, reselling hardware and offering proprietary routers and servers to their subscribers. This business model offers very low profit margins. Compounding this challenge is both fierce competition from adjacent sectors including OTT and broadband providers, as well as increasingly DevOps-focused customers forcing service providers to develop and provision managed services more rapidly. At the same time, business goals require regular increases in top-line service revenue through more robust service offerings and improve service profitability. The good news is that NFV technology can help restore a service provider’s service profitability by making it easier to design and roll out new services while ditching complex and expensive proprietary hardware. Service providers won’t just see new revenue, but will watch their CapEx and OpEX drop by up to 80 percent! This panel will discuss how virtualized network functions (VNFs) can augment an MSP’s offerings, increase margins, agility and total addressable market.

From Monolithic to Microservices: Scaling Technology and Process for a Digital World
API-11
We all know designing large applications as a series of modular components all communicating with each other over APIs can have numerous advantages. When moving from monolithic design to microservices, you are increasing the number of moving parts that all must work together to deliver the same amount of functionality. This increases both the overhead and complexity of both your internal processes and procedures to manage these components, as well as the technology needed to continuously test and monitor them. This presentation we will outline the common mistakes people make when adopting more API-driven applications; discuss adjustments you can make to your workflow and technology, such as integrating performance testing into build and deployment systems, and triaging performance issues as if they were functional bugs; and, finally, attendees will receive guidance on ways to execute these practices at scale.

Panel: Rerouting the Customer Journey through Embeddable Applications
API-12
In today’s customer obsessed world, the contact center plays a more critical role in the maintenance and growth of an organization’s customer base than ever before. A customer’s experience with the contact center begins with initial contact, whether that be a phone call, email, chat or social media message, but that doesn’t mean that is where the customer’s journey began. From there, agents have the difficult task of navigating through the customer’s history, as well as a series of current problems and questions, all while maintaining professionalism. Not only is this process archaic in nature, it’s also stressful for both parties. In order to enhance the effectiveness for both the organization and the customer, a fresh take and re-evaluation of the customer journey from start to finish is necessary. The future of the contact center hinges on the ability to embed applications directly into a single platform. Embeddable applications have the potential to transform the contact center into a multifunctional communication hub that can be integrated into customer workflows, websites and other applications. This session will discuss how embedded applications are changing the overall customer journey to create a more positive experience.

Some estimates have placed the minimum number of subscribers required for an effective cloud business at over 500,000, creating a challenge for some providers. The business models for channel partners for cloud vendors is equally murky, with some offers seeming to be structured to the VAR and some to the agent model. Turbocharge your API Strategy with SDK
API-14
With the incredible growth of connected services, APIS ARE not just here to stay but, are already transforming businesses. Gone are the days of browser- or mobile-first strategies for building technology infrastructure. “API-first’ has become the new imperative to survive and thrive in this fast moving marketplace. The primary consumers of any API is a developer, and a well-documented and simple interface API is a must have, but it’s not everything. A key secret ingredient is the SDK, which will not only help your customers consume APIs faster and more cost effectively, but make them stickier, thereby helping clients become your best promoters. While fundamentally dissimilar to APIs, SDKs provide a platform that helps reduce the effort involved in developing and deploying integrations. They are not without their side effects, as they can be hard to maintain and prone to getting out of date and perform inefficiently, which is why some believe them to be unnecessary. This session will explain why they are, in fact, important to a successful API program, and will present a rigorous approach to building and launching a successful an SDK strategy and what it takes to create a proper architecture and pair APIs with SDKs the right way.

Threat Actors Explored: Grandmothers, Gangsters, Guerrillas and Governments
HT-14
Securonix
The world has changed and what kept us secure thus far has stopped working. Virtually everything is or will soon be connected. Translation: everything is or will soon be “hackable.” Attack surfaces are massive and continue to grow with the expansion of mobility, healthcare devices, critical infrastructure systems, the consumerization of IT, home automation, in-vehicle infotainment, and more. This has created a perfect storm for threat actors, who have now had decades to mature, specialize and build trust groups where they share techniques, technology and talent – regardless of their motivation (financial, political, personal). This session will explore various threat actors including insiders, cybercriminals, hacktivists and nation-states. Historical juxtaposition, use cases and personal stories across two decades, 50 countries and six continents will help the audience better understand some motivations and methods behind these threat actors. By better understanding our enemies, we can create a superior security posture and protect our organizations.

Mobile-first Communications APIs and The Mobile Last Mile
API-04
Today’s availability of cloud communications platforms and open communications technologies including WebRTC, is making it much easier for developers of applications of all kinds to quickly embed real-time voice and video communications for their users. The rapid inclusion of these capabilities into general-purpose mobile messaging platforms, such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat and even within core mobile platforms such Apple’s iOS and Xiaomi’s version of the Android OS, is creating an expectation within consumer and business users that voice and video should always “just be there”. What does this mean for all other application developers? This session answers that, and many others that follow. Can developers simply rely on these general purpose platforms or will they lose application stickiness, user context, key analytics data and ultimately revenue by giving away this functionality to other platforms? How easy is it to embed communications? What needs to be provided behind a mobile communications API to truly support developers’ needs for easy, high-quality experiences for their users. What constraints does RTC add to more standard APIs? Where are the boundaries between what’s included within mobile SDKs versus what’s provided by the cloud in order for developers to deliver quality communications without having to worry about the details.

They Work for Us, Litigating Away the Innovation in Internet Security
HT-15
Securonix
The past few years have led to a pattern of anti-privacy legislation and “suggestions” on how the federal government would like to deal with information. This includes encryption, sharing of breach data, threat intelligence sharing and a removal of privacy for every individual. A significant amount of this has fallen under the guise of “safety” and “anti-terrorism.” These forms of fear mongering can lead to wide open access points for the nefarious access to large amounts of data and a lot of these regulations, legislative efforts and “suggestions” are one way. This can lead to a powerful argument that not only the bad actors are bad, but those organizations that have been built to protect the American citizen are just as nefarious. This session will look at current and proposed legislature and “best practices” as offered through Executive Action and committee and make suggestions to the value of these potential implementations. The discussion will include a look at the lack of knowledge of privacy, security and encryption at the legislative level and ask thought provoking questions as to why our representatives, who don’t understand the basics of information security, are enacting and proposing far reaching proposed legislation.
