Does the Voice of the Customer Really Matter?
MCE-01
Ghostpoint
The Fraser Group
Pitch + Pivot, LLC
Competitive advantage grows fundamentally out of the value a firm is able to create for its buyers. Every organization is a collection of activities that are performed by employees to design, produce, market and support its product and/or service. The way an organization performs these individual activities produces a chain of events, which by strategy are intended to produce value. However many in middle and more senior management positions are frustrated with convincing those controlling budgets that customer engagement performance really matters. When fighting for their customers, many have been forced into decisions based on “what’s the latest technology” with little focus on “what matters to my customers?” Most management groups recognize that the competitiveness of the firm and creating competitive advantage are critical to success but have little direction or belief in how the voice of the customer can and should control their every decision. However, the distance between believing that customer experience matters and learning how to identify and manage the components of an organization that are responsible for delivering on the customer promise is great.

Usage Economy vs. Subscription Economy: Which is the Model of the Future?
NT-01
LogiSense Corporation
Today’s service provider marketplace is complex, growing more convoluted every day. While the subscription model is still alive and well, with many providers finding great success offering subscription-based services, the breadth of new services coming online is making way for the revival of the Usage Economy. And the new usage models aren’t your grandfather’s “pay for what you use” model. This sessions is a discussion of why there has been recent resurgence of the usage model, comparing models and the demands each places on today’s legacy OSS/BSS systems and how to choose a solution that offers what is required to remain competitive in today’s economy.

Building the Secure Phone: Realities and Challenges
SEC-02
Vodia Networks
With every new vulnerability found in the available encryption software over the past months and years, the question arises: Can we still make secure phone calls? Just using TLS and SRTP is just a superficial answer, considering that the microphone and speaker of the device may be already compromised and every proxy in the signalling path would see the SRTP keys. So we said good bye to devices that can run all sorts of apps and go back to the old school embedded systems that runs only one application, the VoIP phone. Putting on ZRTP was causing problems with the setup of the conversation due to the massive number crunching in the beginning of the call, so that we had to offer a different key negotiation algorithm. Conferencing beyond the three party conference remains a core business feature, but in a peer to peer security world it is very hard to get this working without a server device.

The Cases for WebRTC
TR-01
Telecom Reseller
WebRTC is an Applications Programming Interface (API) first introduced as open source code by Google in 2011. The goal for WebRTC is to build a standard-based real time media engine implemented in all of the available browsers. A browser with WebRTC and a web services application can direct the browser to establish a real time voice or video Real Time Protocol (RTP) connection to another WebRTC device or to a WebRTC media server. You will need platforms and servers to implement the applications. The 1000s of use cases for WebRTC are wide ranging from customer service to health care to emergency notifications.

Building Custom Apps Faster And Easier With The REST Interface
AW-03
One Porkchop, Inc
You no longer need a PBX and telephony expert to be able to extend the functionality of your Asterisk PBX. Discover how to leverage the abundance and affordability of web developers around the world. You no longer need to attract, hire, and pay for highly specialized telephony talent. You'll see how an everyday user was able to automate and speed up his call center's productivity by building a simple dialer and and automated voicemail recorder. The app makes about 1000 followup calls a day and was able to cut the time the staff spends on phone calls dramatically so they could spend more time with each live customer. You'll get to see how easy it is to build an app from the ground up using asterisk's new ARI - even for a complete beginner. After the talk, you'll have a clear idea of what ARI does and does not do from a user's perspective, how to quickly and easily create your first ARI application, and most importantly - where to get help. You'll see the development process, from a "back of the napkin" idea, to implementation, to changes and updates, and finally real-world before and after numbers of calls. This is an expanded version of the very highly received presentation at Astricon last year.

PCI Compliance and the Enterprise Contact Center: Are You At Risk?
MCE-04
Ghostpoint
Govolution
Voice4Net
The scope of organizations that are subject to PCI (payment card industry) compliance is staggering. More than 12 million businesses in the United States accept card-based payments, through online, mobile, and voice communications. Every business accepting card payments is subject to PCI Data Security Standards. Most contact centers are under the misconception that if they outsource credit card processing to a compliant, third-party data center, they are exempt from compliance issues. The truth is, if a call comes into a contact center network that ultimately involves the transmission of credit card data, that company is subject to PCI compliance mandates even if that call is subsequently routed to a compliant third-party data center and then returned. This panel discusses new PCI mandates, the risk associated with accepting card payments, and potential strategies that contact centers can implement in order to insulate themselves from PCI regulations.

Security Tools and Techniques
TR-03
Telecom Reseller
Protection, detection, and resolution are the themes of cybersecurity today. You have the firewall and session border controller for external attacks. Good but not enough. Most people don’t know that the average time to discover a sophisticated intrusion is 205 days. Complex security can motivate users to try and circumvent the security controls. A new acronym is KISSME, Keep IT Security Simple, Manageable, and Effective. Protection cannot interfere with productivity. The latest breach discovery tools investigate what is resident in the endpoints. Another set of of tools monitors and analyzes behavior to look for patterns that are related to security behavior. The software looks for normal and then abnormal behavior to discover malicious behavior. This session discusses the emerging security tools.

Controlling the Unknown: Unified communications Deployment Risks and Mitigation
SEC-07
Avotus
Enterprises are incorporating Unified Communications at a rapid pace due to its low-cost value proposition and expected increase in productivity. Are there “hidden costs” that are not being fully appreciated? Do they outweigh the benefits? The risks of implementing a UC solution aren’t always obvious and go beyond a simple errant text or instant message (IM), including: - Legal Liability; -Regulatory Compliance; - Loss of Intellectual Property; - Loss of Productivity: Misuse of Corporate Assets A successful UC deployment involves ongoing and seamless monitoring and reporting on UC asset usage. Critical to a successful long-term UC strategy is comprehensive visibility and actionable insights regarding misuse, abuse and intellectual property sharing. An Enhanced Usage Reporting platform can mitigate the risks associated with a UC deployment and allow the firm to reap the productivity gains from UC with confidence. Can you track UC Usage and protect your firm? What is the cost of a security breach? These questions and other security-related UC implementation issues are challenging users and service providers.

SIP Trunking Success
TR-05
Telecom Reseller
If there is any theme in IT today; it is a flat or reduced the IT budget. One budget candidate is implementing SIP trunking and retiring the T1 and PRI carrier connections. SIP trunking can, in most cases, produce enough savings to warrant the change. Although SIP trunks have been around for years, they still have problems, based on the 2015 SIP Survey by The SIP School™, which you will learn about in this presentation. The proliferation of SIP trunking makes the bandwidth calculations for those SIP trunks an issue that the IT organization must resolve. Too much capacity and money is wasted. Too little capacity and calls will be blocked, callers will abandon the call, the enterprise agents will be less productive, and the enterprise's reputation for service may be harmed.

BYOC and Shadow IT: Why Modern-Day Enterprises Must Monitor Cloud Usage
SEC-09
The concept of Shadow IT is accelerating in today’s enterprise because cloud applications are easier and faster to self-provision and get up-and-running. Employees and business units are able to avoid IT processes and scheduling backlogs for developing custom applications or evaluating and procuring commercial systems to fulfill specific enterprise needs, spurring a Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC) mentality. As a result, companies are adopting cloud services at a rapid pace, often with little visibility into the extent or true cost of adoption. With the efficiencies, agility and scalability that BYOC brings, it also brings inherent dispersion of data, security risks and decentralization. Without a plan to safely usher employees through a process of cloud governance, enterprise leadership will soon be faced with unquantified rogue spend, data consumption and data risk that could be more costly than the savings associated with the benefits of cloud services. This session will help CIOs and IT teams think about different approaches that could lead to best practices to better analyze services that are potentially being used by employees.

The Secrets to Successful Partnering Between Marketing and Sales in a Digital World

Today’s reality is that marketing can measure the impact of everything they do as a result of new tools. But just because you can market to specific buyers and can measure it doesn’t mean you are effectively closing deals if you aren’t in lockstep with your Sales organization. Learn how partnering with Sales can improve your campaign messaging to reflect real pain points, how to balance inbound and outbound marketing to drive traffic and quality leads, as well as how to drive alignment through SLAs, collaborative campaign planning and integration of CRM and marketing automation systems with communications platforms. The results will be a new, real-world perspective of how buyers engage with your brand, better qualified leads that lead to faster closes, and a new “always-on” change management model that can respond to real-time changes in buying habits, market trends and competitive challenges.

2016 will see many new technologies flourish much like we have seen with the sharing economy, security and mobile. One of the most important areas of growth will be in APIs or application programming interfaces. Name any company you’ve heard of and they are likely exposing the internal workings of their company through an API. Why? Because they absolutely have to. To be more specific, APIs allow the services of company A to be used by developer B to provide an array of enhanced solutions. For example, the Uber API is being used by OpenTable, TripAdvisor and Starbucks to name a few. APIs can be highly disruptive. This means every business has to pay attention to the new opportunities they are presenting or potentially be displaced. When you realize virtually all markets are opening up to APIs at once, it’s fair to say, there really hasn’t been an opportunity like this ever before. Considering that apps have low to almost no distribution cost thanks to app stores and the cloud, at the same time, the amount of useful data and programmable functions available to developers is literally skyrocketing. This increases their value asymmetrically. What this means is – development costs aside, the opportunity to rapidly bring innovative solutions to market, all made possible by the leveraging of new and existing APIs is very inexpensive. Conversely, the right solutions can be immensely lucrative. Come spend an hour debating with a panel of experts from across the communications ecosystem who will be the winners and losers in the API economy. Be sure you are positioned to make sure your company ends up on the right side!

Fraud is a huge industry problem. In its latest 2013 global fraud loss survey, the Communications Fraud Control Association (CFCA) found that PBX and VoIP hacking fraud methods accounted for $4.4B and $3.6B in lost carrier revenue, respectively. To make matters worse, fraud losses are actually growing faster than telecom revenues, representing 2.1% of total global revenues. However, most PBX owners remain unaware of fraud until they receive a bill for thousands of dollars for services they never used, along with long legal battles with the phone company. Disputes between carriers and their customers whose PBXs were compromised have reached epidemic proportions.

Becoming a Profitable Hosted VoIP Provider
NT-10
Xpedeus
This session will methodically review the steps necessary to design and build a hosted voice infrastructure, based upon open source standards, that will allow your IT consulting (MSP) or telephone system company to transition your customers from buying low margin commodities of internet bandwidth, telephone service and premise system, with 3 relationships that they hate to manage; to buying a customer hosted VoIP solution and network services from you, with 1 relationship they are happy to manage. Move from making unsustainable 8-10% agent margins to making highly profitable sustainable margins on higher revenue.

While this model can and does work, it easy to not realize success without not having a solid plan of technologies, partners, and know-how. After this session you will understand what steps you need to take in order to provide your customers with a voice solution they love, you keep these customers happy, and realize great margins.

SIP Trunking Success
TR-10

Parts Authority Case Study: An Asterisk/ FreePBX Rollout
AW-09
Sangoma
Over the past four decades, Parts Authority has grown to over 70 locations, each of which has a customer support team handling incoming calls from customers across the country. In 2011, Parts Authority began transitioning from a traditional phone system to an Asterisk VoIP system using FreePBX from Sangoma as its GUI (graphical user interface) in locations in Georgia, DC, Maryland, and New Jersey. Rather than opting for a hosted IP PBX, Parts Authority took the unusual step of maintaining complete control over the infrastructure. In doing so it was able to build in additional security and redundancy that included a simultaneous registration model for automatic, seamless failover from a primary to a backup PBX for inbound calls. In making the transition to Asterisk, Parts Authority was able to streamline system management, reduce complexity and costs, improve voice quality, and reduce the percentage of dropped call incidents from 5% to less than 1%. In this joint case study presentation, Tony Lewis, from Sangoma and Robert Pesiri, network engineer from Parts Authority will provide an overview of how Parts Authority implemented and secured its enteprise-wide VoIP system. The presentation will provide details on configurations, monitoring, failover strategies, reporting and registration. It will also discuss why Parts Authority chose to commit to an “out of the box” strategy versus a customized model; and the role FreePBX played in facilitating this approach. During this presentation, the spreakers will share how this Asterisk/FreePBX approach succeeded in reducing points of failure and ensuring full disaster recovery capabilities.

How Consumer Videoconferencing Provides a Model for Enterprise Communications
BT-03
Let's Do Video
Traditionally, videoconferencing adoption has been driven from the “top down”. High level execs are sold on the documented ROI benefits of VC technology and mandate its use throughout the workforce. This resulted in the technology being limited to specific use cases, with very little room for creativity or adaptation by the users. But, today’s video technology is so affordable, flexible, and powerful that a rapidly growing consumer grassroots is coming up with new and creative applications at a furious pace. The rate at which completely new applications are not only being developed, but gaining mainstream acceptance, is beyond anything we have seen before. For example, Twitch.tv, which allows video gamers to live broadcast as they play, while interacting with their viewers, recently sold to Amazon for just under $1B.

Voice and Video over IP Driving Changes in Infrastructure Security
AW-11
Sangoma Technologies
While IT has been addressing security issues on enterprise networks for some time, traditional infrastructures often do not have sufficient capabilities to secure IP-based voice and video communications. Not only has voice and video convergence changed some fundamentals of network infrastructure design, it has opened the door to new security challenges that can no longer be addressed by traditional firewalls. For the most part firewalls have done a commendable job protecting users from web- related attacks. But they are simply not equipped to deal with voice and video – both of which require “holes” in existing firewalls to enable two-way communications. This opens the door to a whole new range of voice-related security threats. Application layer gateways (ALGs) have played some part in improving the security of IP networks. But in many cases that’s not enough. The next logical step in a security strategy is session border controllers (SBCs). As programmable tools, they can be configured based on pre-determined policies around functions ranging from notice of registration and monitoring to security settings and prioritization. In this presentation, Nenad Corbic, VP of Engineering at Sangoma, will take the audience through the changing security landscape for converged networks. He will look at the distinction between conventional firewalls, session border controllers, and router/firewall ALGs, and where each plays a role in securing today’s networks. Corbic will conclude with an overview of the security fundamentals of setting up IP-based networks and the common mistakes organizations make that can jeopardize security.

Building a Massively Scalable Cloud Service from the Ground Up
NT-13
This session will detail the process of building a greenfield, massively scalable cloud service. As many of us are assembling open source and SaaS components to power our next generation applications, it seems as easy as choosing the leaders in each space and just gluing them together using APIs. This sentiment couldn’t possibly be more wrong. Along the path to constructing a scalable cloud service, there are many options and critical decisions to take. This session covers missteps and lessons learned, as well as successes from real service-building experiences, including issues like: segmenting the system, supporting horizontal scaling, physical vs. virtual hosts, handling cross data center deployments, managing redundancy, and supporting a cloud-based development environment.

When Does Cloud Trump Hosted or On-Premises UC?
UC-06
Sangoma Technologies
The debate between on-premises, hosted, or cloud solutions is one that businesses of all sizes know well. While the argument for moving data applications such as email to a hosted or cloud environment are clear, the one area that continues to create confusion for business owners is VoIP/unified communications. Voice in particular is a different matter. Voice-based apps have come relatively late to the world of cloud for a number of valid reasons – not the least of which is the fact that voice communications are critical, real-time functions that can’t afford a millisecond of latency; and prioritization of traffic is an absolute must. When it comes to decision time, large enterprises tend to side with on-premises or hosted solutions for their mission critical needs, because it allows them to control their destiny when managing their resources. For those without the in-house resources to do that however, cloud is quickly gaining traction as a viable alternative as more products and services become available. The ultimate decision depends on issues such as existing infrastructure, cost, scalability, security and what payment model makes the most economic sense.

Historically, call centers have been bound to closed source software, proprietary hardware and lengthy contracts. This expensive and inflexible model just doesn’t work with todays cloud-based, open source technology culture. Because of frustrations with limitations to outdated software, we hunkered down and developed our own solution in-house that allowed us the flexibility and open architecture to make changes as needed. Then in June of 2015 we released this software open source, free to the world under the name OpenAnswer. It’s a fully functional TAS software package released under AGPLv3 licensing.
